A shooting Saturday night at a block party in Memphis, Tennessee, left two people dead and six injured, and one victim remains in critical condition, according to police.
The Memphis Police Department said officers responded to a call at 7:19 p.m. at the party. When they arrived, they found five victims with gunshot wounds on the scene. Three were transported to the hospital in critical condition, according to their post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Only one of the six surviving victims remains in critical condition.
The block party was located near Orange Mound Park, which is south of Simons Bank Liberty Stadium. Around 200-300 people were in attendance, Christopher Williams, the Memphis Police Department's public information officer told USA TODAY.
In an email, Williams said "preliminary information indicates there was no permit obtained for the block party."
Police originally reported 16 victims in total but have since said that was an error and confirmed only eight people were shot. According to the department's post on X, police said several victims were likely counted more than once.
On Saturday night, MPD interim Chief Cerelyn "C.J." Davis said there were at least two shooters involved, and that no suspects are in custody, reports the Commercial Appeal, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Police are asking anyone with information or video footage of the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-2274.
